Besides, there's often lots of empty space text nodes interspersed,
aren't there?

<table>
<tr>
  <td>
  ...

will have a node with "\n  " before the TD node, I think?  Those text
nodes are supposed to be ignored.

I'd prefer just to close this bug with a WONTFIX.
