gas compile problems under Tru64 4.0F

I am compiling binutils 2.9.1 and gcc 2.95.2.  The configure script claims that 
it can't configure as and ld, but it still builds the assembler resulting in a 
broken gcc.  Attempting to rebuild with the --with-gnu-as switch produces 
problems with object files missing symbols.

If I remove the gas directory and compile without --with-gnu-as the problem is 
fixed.  i.e. as is broken under Tru64, but it still compiles.
