Fortunately, there's a simple solution to this problem.

The environment variable TMPDIR can be used for this purpose.  Just
set it before running updatedb.  I know this is true for the alpha
findutils (ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu).  I think that it has been around
for quite a while.
