binutils-2.9.5.0.24 won't build with i586-pc-linux-gnulibc

Just tried to install linux-2.4 kernel for better EISA-SCSI support. For
successfull built, I had to upgrade to gcc 2.95.2 and gmake 3.79.1. As
binutils >= 2.9.1.0.25 were also required, I tried to build 2.9.5.0.24.
Alas, though configuring for i586-pc-linux-gnulibc1 target, build fails
in subdir ./binutils with
/usr/bin/crt1.o: In function `_start':
/usr/bin/crt1.o(.text+0x5a): undefined reference to 'main' [...]
I was able to compile and run 'make install' from ./bfd, ./gas, ./ld
subdirs and even build 2.4 kernel with that, but binaries from proper
/binutils subdir are unavailable. Hence, there is a mix of e.g. ranlib
2.8.1 with binutils 2.95 on my system..
