diff difficulties with messages about sockets

I did
$ diff -qr /var /newvar
File /var/run/news/ctlinndJ4DjJB is a socket while file
/newvar/run/news/ctlinndJ4DjJB is a socket

no kidding, [I had just copied it with cp -ax].  well, at least the
wording could be adjusted... does it really need to say anything in
the above case?

$ diff -q /var/run/news/ctlinndJ4DjJB /newvar/run/news/ctlinndJ4DjJB
diff: /var/run/news/ctlinndJ4DjJB: Invalid argument

well, perhaps it should be more forthcoming about why.
diff - GNU diffutils version 2.7
