Hi there,
I believe I found a bug in gdbm-1.8.0 installation process.
My settings are:
address@hidden:~/src/gdbm-1.8.0> uname -a
SunOS sawww 5.8 Generic sun4u sparc SUNW,UltraSPARC-IIi-cEngine
address@hidden:~/src/gdbm-1.8.0> gcc -v
Reading specs from
/usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/sparc-sun-solaris2.8/2.95.3/specs
gcc version 2.95.3 20010315 (release)
address@hidden:~/src/gdbm-1.8.0> gmake -v
GNU Make version 3.79.1, by Richard Stallman and Roland McGrath.
Built for sparc-sun-solaris2.8
I ran `./configure' followed by `gmake' without a problem. Next step,
`gmake install' failed as follows:
address@hidden:~andyt/src/gdbm-1.8.0# gmake install
./mkinstalldirs /usr/local/lib /usr/local/include /usr/local/man/man3
/usr/local/info
/bin/sh ./libtool install -c libgdbm.la /usr/local/lib/libgdbm.la
install -c .libs/libgdbm.so.2.0.0 /usr/local/lib/libgdbm.so.2.0.0
cp: cannot create .libs/libgdbm.so.2.0.0/libgdbm.so.2.0.0: Not a directory
install: cp /usr/local/lib/libgdbm.so.2.0.0
.libs/libgdbm.so.2.0.0/libgdbm.so.2.0.0 failed
gmake: *** [install] Error 2
The problem is quite simple. Makefile defines:
INSTALL = ./install-sh -c
However, `install:' rule in the same Makefile reads:
install: libgdbm.la gdbm.h gdbm.info
$(srcdir)/mkinstalldirs $(libdir) $(includedir) $(man3dir) $(infodir)
$(LIBTOOL) install -c libgdbm.la $(libdir)/libgdbm.la
$(INSTALL_DATA) -o $(BINOWN) -g $(BINGRP) gdbm.h $(includedir)/gdbm.h
$(INSTALL_DATA) -o $(BINOWN) -g $(BINGRP) $(srcdir)/gdbm.3 \
$(man3dir)/gdbm.3
$(INSTALL_DATA) -o $(BINOWN) -g $(BINGRP) $(srcdir)/gdbm.info \
$(infodir)/gdbm.info
Changing `install -c' to `$(INSTALL)' fixes the problem.
Please contact me if you need more information.

Andy
