i'm still a confused newbie... although i am reading the gnu tar manual
[GNU tar: an archiver tool//version 1.12 .. 24 april 1997], i still can't
see the forest in the trees.

to wit: i don't understand what tar accomplishes. why would i want to tar
a directory before i store it, rather than just store it, assuming i DO
NOT USE COMPRESS.

thus, why would i want to tar my home directory before i store it [again,
assuming that i do not compress it]

i'm probably not making sense because this is "a next question" and yet i
never see it addressed.
