1) With the -s option, it does not report all of this error description:

address@hidden src]$ bunzip2 -c /home/u03/kernels/patches/patch-2.4.4-ac5.bz2 |
patch -p0 -s
The text leading up to this was:
--------------------------
|diff -u --new-file --recursive --exclude-from /usr/src/exclude
linux.vanilla/CREDITS linux.ac/CREDITS
|--- linux.vanilla/CREDITS      Mon Apr 30 15:13:06 2001
|+++ linux.ac/CREDITS   Fri May  4 16:40:43 2001
--------------------------
File to patch:

2)
It would be useful to print the fully-qualified name of the file it can't find:
address@hidden src]$ bunzip2 -c /home/u03/kernels/patches/patch-2.4.4-ac5.bz2 |
patch  -p1
can't find file to patch at input line 4
Perhaps you used the wrong -p or --strip option?
The text leading up to this was:
--------------------------
|diff -u --new-file --recursive --exclude-from /usr/src/exclude
linux.vanilla/CREDITS linux.ac/CREDITS
|--- linux.vanilla/CREDITS      Mon Apr 30 15:13:06 2001
|+++ linux.ac/CREDITS   Fri May  4 16:40:43 2001
--------------------------
File to patch:

Even a relative filename - I can't see precisly what it expected to find and to
spend more time finding what I should specify, whether by guessint or reading.
