Not enough room for program headers - Help

First: I am not subscribed to this group so cc/bcc me with the comments.

I have a Mandrake 8.1 base system with lots and lots of software installed. I
have started getting the following error on compiles:

Not enough room for program headers (allocated %u, need %u)

where the %u's have various values in them.

There is no shortage of memory on this system:
dual PIII-450 with 750mb ram and lots of disks.
I have watched the links while it fails and never saw more then
150MB used by the linker (ld).

This message comes from "elf.c" in the bfd directory of binutils.
In my version at home (not sure if the same one at work where the failure is
but could well be) the line number is 3096.

This error doesn't occur for all links. It does occur if I try to do a rpm
--rebuild on binutils....
also for avifile and several more ...(db3 etc...)

There are several GB worth of "libs" on this machine and a
"ldconfig -v " can take 3 mins or more to spool all the objects
down the console.

Advice is appreciated.
  Is this a "tune-able"?
Is there a patch possible without screwing up the system?
Have I reached some sort of max-library limit?

Thanks,

Walter Lundby
