Using the special Dot form in a .set directive?

Is it possible to use the special Dot form in a .set directive? When I try
to do a
.set somename,.
the value somename is always 0, regardless of where in the file it is.
I'm using this version of gas...
% gas --version

...compiled with this version of gcc...
% gcc --version
3.0.2
...on this type of machine...
% uname -a
AIX gristle 3 4 0044505F4C00
% oslevel
4.3.3.0
...with the attached assembley file. It won't assemble correctly for what
I belived is correct input. Is this a bug? Thanks for your attention.
