'ld -s' not stripping (2.12, mips-dec-ultrix4.4)

Hello,

Apparently 'ld -s' (version 2.12) does nothing under Ultrix 4.4.  On the
other hand 'strip' works perfectly.  This was also the case in several
earlier versions of the loader.  Anyone has an idea where to start looking?
