BFD internal error

I am attempting to build Linux kernel src v2.2.19 on a Pentium 90 system 
running debian v2.2r5.  At some point, the make cd's into 
/usr/src/linux/drivers/block and runs the following command:

ar  rcs block.a ll_rw_blk.o ide.o genhd.o floppy.o ide-probe.o rz1000.o 
cmd640.o ide-pci.o ide-dma.o ide-proc.o ide-disk.o

which results in the following error message:

BFD: BFD internal error, aborting at ../../bfd/libbfd.c line 606 in 
bfd_write_bigendian_4byte_int

BFD: Please report this bug.

I did an ar --help to find out who to send the bug report to, which is how 
this email came to be.
