binutils configure doesn't configure ld (HP-UX 11.00)

I'm trying to rebuild (and then reinstall) binutils-2.12, and when I run
configure, I get the following message (at the very beginning of the
output):
Configuring for a hppa2.0w-hp-hpux11.00 host.
*** This configuration is not supported in the following subdirectories:
    ld
    (Any other directories should still work fine.)

I've unpacked the binutils-2.12.tar.gz file to
/home/szetlan/builds/binutils-2.12, then I created a separate directory
/home/szetlan/builds/binutils-2.12-build.  To run configure, I typed (tcsh):
cd /home/szetlan/builds/binutils-2.12-build
setenv CC=gcc
../binutils-2.12/configure >& configure.out

Any ideas?
