gettext compendiums - 'translation memory'?

I was wondering about the idea of genericizing the idea of compendiums
into something like that which the KDE project does:

http://i18n.kde.org/translation-howto/gui-specialized-apps.html

specifically the part where they reference the networked repository
they have.  It would be great to make this sort of thing a shared
resource for all free software users.

Just a thought - sorry if I'm posting to the wrong place...
