This is probably true for Linux packages (and by that, I mean the sad
quantity of software that only runs on Linux systems -- I'm intentionally
not including the GNU/ prefix here because it's frequently not even
portable enough to run on other glibc systems).  But if you dive into the
broader world of somewhat more obscure software, particularly older stuff,
DESTDIR is a fairly new concept but prefix has been around for a long
time.
