Thanks for your prompt reply Paul. I don't believe I can force case
sensitivity on the FS. I do hope there is someone out there who may know
more in the Windows sense. I've used these versions of tar and gzip for
simple backups at home for quite a while now and it's only been since
I've switched to Windows 2000 and later XP that problems appeared. My
main OS in Linux but I still do use Windows for quite a few things.
Thanks again and hope to hear more...

This sounds like a problem with case conversion in your filesystem.
Sorry, I don't use Microsoft Windows so I can't be of much help for
you, but perhaps you can work around the problem by telling your
filesystem to use the Unix convention that case is always sensitive in
file names. Or perhaps someone else on this list with more experience
with Microsoft Windows can chime in with more-accurate advice.

I should warn you that tar 1.12 is quite old now. I am surprised that
ftp.gnu.org is still distributing a DOS executable for it. Perhaps we
should stop doing that, as we shouldn't give the false impression that
we're maintaining it.

Can you please send text mail as plain text? That saves me time.
