For what it's worth, starting with Automake 1.7 it's easy to
append additional directories to aclocal's search path: grep the
manual for `dirlist'. This helps in systems where tools are
installed with disparate ${prefix}es.
Still, it's better to embed an m4/ directory in your project
as Bruno suggested.
