Hello Dan,
I'm currently evaluating the ``gofast'' patch.
Unfortunately, the maintainer of GNU awk recently had to remove a
part of it, since it caused a bug. I have to understand the bug and
make sure that it cannot bite in grep before I accept the gofast
patch. I don't want to improve the speed of non-C locales at the
expense of braking the C locale.
