Since I wrote that, I've learned that the version of standards.texi
on ftp.gnu.org is way out of date. Sorry.
Well, I was also refering to a out-of-date version of the GCS. The
latest is from January, 2005.
I think the distinction boils down to this: if I say
make datadir=FOO
should the data files go into FOO or into FOO/awk? With your
suggestion, they go to the latter; with the original Gawk's
configury they go to the former. I'm not sure which one is
correct: they both seem to have their merits.
In light of the current GCS, you can now have both, datadir and
datarootdir--the latter would be what one should modify to get the
behaviour I was seeking.
I guess it is just a matter of updating the various Makefile's and
configure.ac to use that and all would be good.
Pitty that just about no GNU program uses this datarootdir variable
yet...
