By design. (Not that I especially agree with it.) This is why they are
not willing to change it.
I was able to only uploaded
signed copies of config.guess and config.sub once -- around mid-2004.
I suggest asking sysadmin to remove those versions; better to have
nothing there at all than obsolete versions, I would think?
I am happy for the script to use a http URL--it will probably be
easier for most users anyway.
My feeling too.
I went through all this same stuff for texinfo.tex, BTW. My sympathies :).
BTW, I can make them available from ftp://tug.org, but I suspect that
might be more confusing than it's worth.
