yes, this is the right workaround. (Or set LC_ALL=C; export LC_ALL.)

Yes, the fact that LANG defaults to a utf8 locale is a feature, not bug.

The fact that grep is so slow in that case _is_ a bug in GNU grep,
and we plan to fix it.

Actually, Red Hat is much ahead of the genuine version in this respect.
(Thanks to Tim Waugh.)  So the problem should lessen with recent Fedora
releases.  But it's still good idea to set LANG or LC_ALL to C .
