More accurately, it's pre-OS X *software* rather than pre-OS X *operating systems* that use the newline = \r convention. Plenty of such software still runs on OS X, and it's more or less unpredictable what you get nowadays: there are even two versions of Perl, a Unix one and a Mac Classic one, e.g., which can cause confusions, since Perl's "\n" means 0x0D rather than 0x0A in the Mac Classic version.
Then it is unlikely to be an issue. The source of the problem is most likely to be a mail program saving an attachment. So, the few remaining folks out there still using OS9 mail programs who receive uuencoded files via email and need to decipher them with current versions of the sharutils can use some os9-to-unix converter. The effort to do that is certainly less than the effort to support the configuration. :) Cheers - Bruce
