Why awk use fork?  Can awk run without fork support?

I haven't the foggiest idea of why GNU awk would use fork (if it does, but I'll take your word for it barring other feedback :-); this being said, the original "one-true-awk" originally written by Aho, Weinberger, and Kernighan (IIRC) does not use fork:


There's even a precompiled awk binary for Win32 platforms there.
What platform were you trying to port awk to, anyway...?
