If you want to reduce patch size, dropping the readability requirement,
"xdelta" might be the tool to use. Otherwise, if you pursue the diff/patch road, you need the complicity of the diffutils maintainer
if there is one, or become that maintainer if there is none.

I would be interested in updating the standalone wdiff as you
suggested.  I can see that this would be a much easier starting point
than trying to integrate wdiff into diff right off the bat.

I'd be quite ready to transmit wdiff duties, or even have them stolen from me :-). But if you do not want them, then I would ask that we discuss each patch as a separate entity, isolated from the others.
