Unfortunately, that breaks threading and makes replying to you very
awkward. The newsgroup that you are referring to is merely a gateway
around a mailing list, and you picked the wrong gateway. If you want a
newsgroup gateway around the coreutils mailing list, you can use
http://news.gmane.org/gmane.comp.gnu.coreutils.bugs among others.
Meanwhile, most GNU mailing lists do not require you to be a subscriber to
post - there is a human moderator in the loop which allows non-subscribers
posts through, so waiting for a confirmation mail is not necessary.

Not from the ftp.gnu.org site, but it is possible from the version control
site. For example, http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/coreutils.git/log/.

You are allowed to be skeptical; we cannot force you to upgrade. But you
may want to bring it up with your distro that their version is old. You
really are missing out on a lot of bug fixes and performance improvements,
particularly in such essential software.
