Do you want DirectX to make a 3D board? If that's your wish, I think you
should rather consider OpenGL. OpenGL have a GPL'ed implementation called
Mesa, and can therefore be ported to other platforms. If something is
implemented by pure Microsoft libraries like DirectX or MFC, we will get
stuck with that platform forever.
BTW, there's also two libraries connecting GTK+ to OpenGL. GtkGLExt
<URL:http://gtkglext.sourceforge.net/> and GtkGLArea which now is a part of
the gnome/gtk cvs code. If anyone wants to make 3D boards for GNU
Backgammon, they should start with one of these libraries.
