We might need more than just a logo:

(a) a picture for the splash screen (possibly also shown in the
    Help->About dialog)

    This picture can be a bitmap, since we do not need to scale it.

(b) An icon for GNOME/KDE/Wintendo. I think windows is 32x32 pixels, but 
    I don't know aobut GNOME/KDE.

(c) A Logo for the web page. This picture should probably be vector 
    graphics for scaling.

Maybe we can find one logo that matches (a)-(c).

But I like your idea about the logo competition, altough I assume the
prizes will be relatively small ;-)
