I thought I'd pop in and post an update here now that my box runs gcc
3.2.1.  Pretty nice upgrade, I must say. :)

Previous build:
    egcs 2.91.66, no compile options
    ~17900 evals/sec
New build:
    gcc 3.2.1, -O3 -march=athlon-xp -mcpu=athlon-xp -msse
    ~21250 evals/sec

Rest of the box is a previously mentioned; Linux 2.4.20, Athlon
XP2000+, bastardized RedHat 6.2.
