As Jørn said: get the build without FreeType.
(look under
http://users.skynet.be/bk228456/GNUBgW.htm#change_gnubg
to change gnub_nofreetype-yymmdd.exe to gnubg.exe)
(and yes: you need LibArt as well)
...
and keep Øystein's installation (do not uninstall it!) of GNU Backgammon.

I expect the problems with FreeType will be solved soon.
Holger mentioned the new release of FreeType not to crash anymore.
The only difference however with the 'normal' build: the digits (1 to 24) on
the board and on the doubling cube aren't that nice. You will have a full
functioning GNU Bg.
