Some days ago I wrote a message about this here. At least with my way of building gnubg I haven't experienced any problems related to freetype since I tried the newest library version. On http://storm.prohosting.com/gnubg/ I also describe this procedure and the prerequisites.
But I think that neither Nardy nor Oystein use the libraries in these versions yet.
So the version I provide on my gnubg homepage above ought to run well. I'll not update this page on a regular basis, however.
