external.c does not compile here.

Ah, of course, you're trying with HAVE_SOCKETS?

Olivier, does the local communication also require sockets? If not we could try to build for multiprocessor systems first.

2. ExternalRead (line 149) and ExternalWrite (line 196) both want SIGPIPE

Yes. There isn't.
