[Bug-gnubg] GNU Backgammon for Windows Bug: Must Be Administrator to Run

From: MS BG
Subject: [Bug-gnubg] GNU Backgammon for Windows Bug: Must Be Administrator to Run
Date: Mon, 22 Sep 2003 11:00:07 -0700 (PDT)

SUMMARY

While I expect only Administrators to be able to install the program, I would expect Users to be able to run the program, but they cannot.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

1. Log on as Administrator to a Windows NT-based system such as Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Windows NT.

2. Install GNU Backgammon for Windows (installation archive 27 July 2003 from http://home.online.no/~oeysteij/index.html updated with build 030921 from http://users.skynet.be/bk228456/GNUBgW.htm).

3. Log off and log back on as a User.

4. Attempt to run GNU Backgammon.

RESULT

Initialization error.

EXPECTED RESULT

Run the program.

ANALYSIS

The problem seems to be that Users do not have write access to the files .gnubgautorc, .gnubgmenurc, or the directory .gnubg.

SOLUTIONS

(in ascending order of preference)

1. Run the program the first time as Administrator. This will initialize the files and Users will then be able to run the program, but will not be able to save any settings.

2. Change the permissions on these files to give Users write access. They will then be able to run the program and save settings, but all users on the system will share the same settings.

3. Save the files in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\GNU\Backgammon. This will give each user their own copy of the files and allow them to have independent settings.

4. Save settings in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\GNU\Backgammon registry key. This follows the Windows standard for savings preferences.
