I've got it building and checked in a few small changes, the 3d board 
and new preferences now work fine with gtk2 on windows.

Achim, were you the person trying to get a linux 3d build working a 
while ago?  If so can you try again, I remember adding some #if !LINUX 
around some of the code, perhaps it will work without this now.
