I'm running Gentoo also and here it works fine now. I'm using a
Nvidia Card with the latest (I guess it's 5336-r1) build.
Gtkglext-1.0.5 is installed, I compiled ftgl from the source, but
rembember to have had also some problems while compiling it.

Tell me what's going wrong, perhaps send methe config.log. Mine is
attached (gzipped).
