Gentoo is my personal favorite as well. It does take a while before
you have everything just the way you want it, and even then there is a
bit of extra work involved.  I coexist fairly well with fedora (and
Debian) as well. I have bad experiences with Ubuntu. So all in all, if
I was you I would stick to suse as you seem to prefer to have a system
that just works for you.
