The issues with X11 haven’t been around for many years. At one time (5-6 year ago) OS/X 10.3 and vintage 10.4 X11 was not part of the  basic install. You had to know that their was a separate package that could be installed manually from the DVD. There is both a client X11 and SDK (Quartz X11)

Then on top of it, there was an X11 from OpenDarwin (DarwinX I think they called it). If you had this variant installed it could cause some grief and collide with Apples official release and if multiple SDK’s overlapped it caused hassle for any build environment (Such as Fink).

I haven’t really considered X11 to be much of an issue in quite some time. In 10.5, X is Preinstalled. A couple years ago they finally fixed the X11/3D bug in the X server that rendered 3D unusable on old 10.4 PPC releases.

These days is rather easy to set up a build environment with Macports.

As for using Native GTK, I haven’t tried it yet but I’ll give it a spin if I get the chance today.

I'll start by saying that I've got no idea about Macs...

Several (non-technical) people have told me they had difficulty getting gnubg to
run on Macs.  One of the hurdles seems to be installing X11 (clashes with fink
for example).  Anyway to the subject, has anyone tried using gtk natively with
gnubg?  Here's the website:
