I build with the microsoft 2008 compiler (there is a free version of this
available). I tried the intel compiler in the past and it wasn't much faster,
the microsoft 2005 compiler seemed to catch up with intel in my tests.

I haven't compared the speed of gcc to ms lately, but in the past they have been
similar.
