[Bug-gnubg] Designing backgammon boards via GnuBG

For anyone with an interest in color theory (or even if you're just waiting
for that rollout to finish), GnuBG's capabilities are outstanding, allowing
you to control virtually every variable and indulge your creative skills.

If you have little experience with this sort of thing, have some patience;
great board designs are works of art and can take quite a while to get
right.  If you find that you're getting serious about it, you may want to
create a file of the code numbers of your favorite colors (and there may be
a way to save the colors themselves).

But if you've developed several designs, SAVE YOUR WORK.  This protects
against both a hard-drive crash and a GnuBG bug that purges the designs.  I
haven't been able to reproduce it, but it's likely that it occurs when
there's a space overflow in the program.  Although it will let you create as
many designs as you want, the program behaves erratically if more than 25
exist.  So if you really want to create that many designs, save off some of
your earlier work.

You might try using "Export" to do this, but I wasn't able to get that to
work with Windows.  Instead, I carefully edit the file containing the
designs.  With Windows, the file is "\Documents and
Settings\<user>\.gnubg\boards.xml".   

Before making any changes, copy the file to the Backup directory.  Then you
can delete or modify the sections in the .gnubg directory.  Changes should
normally be limited to renaming and reordering the boards, but certain
fields are fairly safe to change.  When done, you may want to save the new
file in the Backup directory before accessing it with GnuBG.

Although I don't recommend it, you could edit \Program
Files\gnubg\boards.xml to remove designs that you'll never use.  However,
this is unlikely to provide more space for your own designs and will likely
be replaced with the original file when you upgrade the program.
