Those files I believe are slightly different than the form used now so
they won't match what is produced locally by you. Usually you can tell
if the database and neural net files are loaded properly is if you go to:

"Help" menu
"About gnubg"
click the "evaluation engine" button

This will give information on the loaded bearoff databases and neural
nets being used. A default install would produce output like this:

 * Contact neural network evaluator:
   - version 0.15, 250 inputs, 128 hidden units.

 * Crashed neural network evaluator:
   - version 0.15, 250 inputs, 128 hidden units.

 * Race neural network evaluator:
   - version 0.15, 214 inputs, 128 hidden units.

 * In memory 1-sided bearoff database evaluator
   - generated by GNU Backgammon
   - up to 15 chequers on 6 points (54264 positions) per player
   - database includes gammon distributions
   - number of reads: 0
 * In memory 2-sided bearoff database evaluator
   - generated by GNU Backgammon
   - up to 6 chequers on 6 points (924 positions) per player
   - database includes both cubeful and cubeless equities
   - number of reads: 0
