I too prefer to avoid use of $Id$.
It wouldn't mean too much by itself anyhow, because once
the addition made it into my coreutils repository, the
numbers there would be sure to differ -- or maybe they'd
even be the same while the files are the otherwise identical.
However, once things sync up enough, I'll have to find a way
to make my coreutils stuff share the gnulib repository -- e.g.,
so that when I tag a coreutils release, it also tags the ,v files
in gnulib.
