Thanks for your work on this! This (and the followup fixes) seem to fix
all the test-gc-md4 and the test-md4 failures I reported.
There's still the test-crc failure remaining. I saw that one on
powerpc-ibm-aix5.3.0.0
hppa2.0-hp-hpux10.20
i686-pc-linux-gnu
x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu
sparc-sun-solaris2.8
like this:

back when I did the other tests. I don't think any of the files have
changed since, though.
