I searched a little, e.g.,
but didn't find anything compelling.
Even a survey that's just 6 months old is seriously out of date.
That was evident in the fedora-maintainers discussion.

Not relevant.
With git or hg, anyone who pulls gets the entire repository.
If you want backups, just arrange to pull regularly, and save
each copy on your favorite backup medium.
