If you've looked at the above summary, you might notice that if the first
line of a commit log message is a summary for the entire change set,
it renders better when converted to git.

BTW, Karl, I notice a lot of "." log entries in your name.  I presume most
are done automatically.  For those, what do you think about changing the
script to use a log that is a little more readable to the uninitiated?
E.g., something like

  name-of-script: regenerate MODULES.html

But, taking a step back, now I wonder why a generated file is
checked in to that directory at all.

How about this instead: we can continue to keep the generated file under
version control and accessible, but instead of letting its deltas clutter
up the source code repo, generate it into the savannah web repo instead:

  http://web.cvs.savannah.gnu.org/viewcvs/gnulib/?root=gnulib
