Sure, but in the particular case of bootstrapping gnu packages, if gawk
works, that seems pretty sufficient to me?  I don't see why we need to
cater for other implementations in *GNU* libtool.  It's not like gawk is
hard to install, anyway, for anyone who cares.

Seems better than painfully reimplementing functionality using fold and
cut and whatever, especially since you are probably right that other
implementations of those won't be robust either.  So what's the other
