Yes, if you want to try out the patch then you need to install autotools
first. Since I expect that to be some hassle in itself, let's not go
that way now.

Sure. My patch doesn't fix the fpurge error, though. I think the best
thing would be if you answer the question about FILE that Eric asked you
in <http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lib.gnulib.bugs/13136>, then I'm
sure someone will fix the fpurge issue, and maybe Jim will provide an
updated coreutils package for you to test that all issues are fixed.
