Sorry, I don't use C++ much, but presumably your way of doing it
messes up C++ in some cases, whereas mine just sticks to C, which
is where the problem lies.

Yes. Here's what I used:
$ cc -V
cc: Sun C 5.12 SunOS_sparc 2011/11/16
As far as the ACL thing goes, it's not high on my list to worry about
(I'm not a big believer in ACLs) but if someone else wants to fix it
patches will be gratefully accepted.
