Hello.

Let me apologize at the start if this is not the correct forum, but I
don't know of any other at the moment.

That said, I have a new 4gb iPod formatted in HFS+. I'd rather not go
through the trouble of converting to Fat32 if at all possible. I have
built HFSPLUS functionality into my Linux kernel 2.6.8. I am able to
"see" the iPod, but have run into an odd situation.

While setting up my Linux system to use the iPod, I brought it to work
to show to some coworkers. At this time I loaded up iTunes on the Win32
system I have there so I could at least get some files onboard the iPod
immediately. During the installation process it appears that the
firmware on the iPod was updated. The Win32 client worked out fine and
I have a few mp3 files loaded and working on the iPod.

However, now when I get home to my Linux workstation, when I plug the
iPod into the USB port, the kernel only sees *TWO* partitions instead of
the *THREE* it used to see:

Jan 17 10:33:36 kernel: usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using
address 6
Jan 17 10:33:37 kernel: scsi5 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage
devices
Jan 17 10:33:37 kernel: Vendor: Apple Model: iPod
Rev: 1.62
Jan 17 10:33:37 kernel: Type: Direct-Access
ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Jan 17 10:33:38 kernel: sdf: Spinning up disk....ready
Jan 17 10:33:38 kernel: SCSI device sdf: 7999488 512-byte hdwr sectors
(4096 MB)
Jan 17 10:33:38 kernel: sdf: assuming Write Enabled
Jan 17 10:33:38 kernel: sdf: assuming drive cache: write through
Jan 17 10:33:38 kernel: sdf: sdf1 sdf2
Jan 17 10:33:38 kernel: Attached scsi removable disk sdf at scsi5,
channel 0, id 0, lun 0
Jan 17 10:33:38 kernel: Attached scsi generic sg4 at scsi5, channel 0,
id 0, lun 0, type 0
Jan 17 10:33:38 kernel: USB Mass Storage device found at 6
Jan 17 10:33:58 kernel: cdrom: open failed.
Jan 17 10:34:01 kernel: cdrom: open failed.
Jan 17 10:34:26 kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sdf, sector 7999480

Running parted results in an error that parted can not read the disk
label:

# parted /dev/sdf

Using /dev/sdf
Error: Unable to open /dev/sdf - unrecognised disk label.
Information: The operating system thinks the geometry on /dev/sdf is
497/255/63.

I am currently unable to use gnupod or gtkpod or anything at all on
Linux to read my iPod because I can't mount the /sdf(x) filesystem.

Is there something funky about the latest iPod firmware that breaks
Linux functionality, and if so, can I roll-back the iPod to an earlier
version? Or, barring all that, is there something else I can/should do
to get my iPod to function correctly? I'd really like to start using my
new Christmas present.

Thanks for your help.
