I was using the xlib backend before, but I don't think this is the
problem since I reverted back to the xlib backend with the same result.

Basically only with gifs, I have tested it with jpegs, tiffs, xpms and
they all work find. Although trying to load pngs will crash
ImageViewer.app.

Tried that already :-(.

Yes, just upgraded to the latest cvs yesterday and it is compiled with
xpm, ppm, tiff, png, jpeg and gif support.
