Hmm, but if you're using Apple's foundation you combo is:
apple-apple-(apple/gnu)
My patches relate to
apple-gnu-gnu
Which means Apple/NeXT runtime - gnustep-base (- gnustep-gui) i.e. 
building base against the Apple/NeXT Runtime.
