Try the command

mkdir ~/Foo.txt

Then GWorkspace will show this directory as a regular file, not as a
directory.  If you double-click over it GWorkspace will try to open the
directory using the default text editor.

GW can't do anything for this. If you create the directory from a terminal, for 
NSWorkspace "Foo.txt" will be a plain file.
But I've added an alert that shows up if you try to rename the directory "Foo" in 
"Foo.txt" with gworkspace. (This is the behaviour on OS X)
